As a Minnesota pest control company, it’s not uncommon to receive phone calls about an invasion of ladybugs within a residential or commercial residence. When we receive these calls, however, we immediately start thinking about the ladybugs look-alike bug, the Asian beetle. Asian beetles look very similar to ladybugs but are distinctly different. If you are noticing an infestation in your Minnesota home or business, EcoTech is here to help.
Ladybug vs. Asian Beetle
While ladybugs are known for bringing good luck into a home, Asian beetles are known for bringing their odor. Asian beetles can secrete a smelly liquid that not only stinks but can affect those who have allergies or asthma problems. Additionally, ladybugs do not bite. While their bites are truly harmless to humans, the Asian beetle is known for being able to bite. So how do you tell the difference? Ladybugs are bright red in color with black spots that can differ in darkness. Asian beetles are known for being paler and leaning towards a dark orange color. They may or may not have dark spots on their bodies. Lastly, ladybugs do not seek shelter in warm places over the winter. However, you may see a large infestation to Asian beetles seeking your home out to survive the winter. So, if you start to see a large amount of ladybug look-a likes coming into your home, it’s likely you have an Asian beetle problem.
Asian Beetle Infestations
The good news about Asian beetles is that they are generally not harmful. However, they do come in large swarms that can be a big nuisance. While they are not harmful, the yellowish fluid that they leave behind can cause a nasty odor in the air and stain walls or clothes. Typically in the summertime, they do a great job staying outside and away from your home. However, from September to November in Minnesota, they begin to search for warmer areas and choose to move indoors. They enter through small cracks around the windows, door frames, or even small cracks in the siding and roof.
