Now that winter is here, there is snow on the ground and everyone has accepted the fact that we are indoors for a while. Our professional exterminators feel we should bring up a couple of interesting facts about bed bugs. We know your itching to have your questions answered! So let’s start…
Bed bugs
A bed bug is a blood sucking creatures that enjoy feasting on its host at night, which often leads them to the bedroom and mattress, hence their name. They resemble a cockroach, though much smaller in every way but still visible to the naked eye. These insects were almost extinct 50 years ago in the US but the amount of infestation has grown rapidly, about 5 times over in the past years. It is thought that international travelers and their suitcases are what revived the population.
How long can bed bugs live without blood?
Some bedbugs can survive 18 months without blood but that doesn’t mean they want to. Though bedbugs prefer a human meal they won’t think twice about feeding from your beloved pet or even rodents.
Do bed bugs hibernate?
Now that its winter, can we stop worrying about bed bugs??! Unless your home or the place they are currently thriving in is less than 61 degrees ferinheight they are not hibernating, they will just continue to feed off you. So this new snowfall will do nothing to affect them. And even in 61 degrees, they only semi-hibernate, still feeding. Cold temperatures have to get to and stay at 0 degrees before affecting them.
How to get rid of them?
Well now that the snow is here it is doubtful that anyone experiencing bed bugs is fine opening their windows and leaving their home for a couple of days, even then, you’d have to wait until its even colder outside. That being said there is a more effective way to kill them, heat!
