Silverfish Infestation in Minnesota
Silverfish are common in most homes – but that doesn’t mean they’re popular! Silverfish are wingless creatures, and they are so named because they rather resemble fish. They also generally gravitate towards warm, moist places – under sinks, in basements, laundry rooms, and the like.
What Will They Do?
Silverfish aren’t terribly destructive – they’re not going to wreak structural havoc on your home, like termites – but they are unappealing. Silverfish will feed on starch and mold, and they also enjoy feasting on paper items, in addition to fabric and food. They also like dark spaces. If you’ve store old magazines in a damp area, for example, that’s going to look quite attractive to this breed of pest.
How Can I Get Rid of Them?
To get rid of silverfish, you need to remove the source of attraction. You can lower your home’s humidity with dehumidifiers and fans, repair leaky plumbing, and do what you can to reduce excess moisture in your laundry area. And be sure to remove any old stacks of newspapers or magazines.
Can I Catch Them?
Some people have found baiting with bottles and jars to be an effective way to eradicate silverfish – but not if you have a bona fide infestation on your hands. If this is the case, it’s best to call a professional pest control service. The professional will treat infested areas with special substance, and then seal off treated cracks and crevices.
